Our History

Our first pharmacy originally began in the early 1900s when Clarence and Dr. Mary Glassen founded Clar-Mar Drug in downtown Phillipsburg. In 1948, Rex Rankin purchased the pharmacy and renamed it, Rankin Drug. It was later purchased by David Rankin in 1972 and remained known as Rankin Drug until 2006. Wenzl Drug had around six employees and was located on the west side of the square in downtown Phillipsburg from 2006 until 2009.

Relocation of Phillipsburg Location

After outgrowing our original location, we researched opportunities to construct a new facility that would accommodate our growing needs.

prior to construction and revitalization efforts.

We selected a corner location on the south side of the downtown square that would provide the room to construct a 5,500 square foot building and install a drive-thru. The additional space allowed us to expand our services and capabilities, such as adding durable medical equipment and oxygen services and installing a Home Health Care showroom.

New Look and New Name

In late 2012, with the company moving forward, the pharmacy’s name was updated to Midwest Family Health, Pharmacy and Home Care to better promote our expanded products and services and to allow for additional growth within the health care industry.

Part of the business name change was in order to support a new model that naturally developed as more and more pharmacies were looking to Midwest Family Health for pharmacy management and development advice. We began to identify other rural community pharmacies that might be looking for new ownership to succeed them.  We believe that hometown pharmacy is one of the key ingredients to keeping rural communities alive and thriving! Our expansion plans include helping pharmacy owners in rural communities that are looking to retire to be able to transition and keep their doors open and serve their rural communities in the Midwest.

Acquiring Additional Locations

In July 2013, Midwest Family Health acquired Unrein Pharmacy in Plainville, Kansas. The Unrein Pharmacy had served the Plainville community for several generations prior to it becoming a Midwest Family Health location. In 2014, Logan Numrich was brought in to be the new Pharmacist in Charge to serve Plainville and the surrounding communities.

August 2013 brought on the third Midwest Family Health location as the owner of the Don Dawson Pharmacy, located in Russell, Kansas, health declined and the pharmacy nearly closed its’ doors. Jake Windscheffel, originally from Smith Center, KS, was recruited to become a partner in the Russell business and is the pharmacist serving this location.

In December 2014, the fourth Midwest Family Health location opened its' doors in Smith Center, KS. The Phillipsburg location had been serving the Smith Center and surrounding areas remotely for the past several years. With the closing of a chain pharmacy in the town, the residents made their desire for Midwest Family Health to open a physical location in Smith Center known. With the addition of Steven Weltmer to our team as our relief pharmacist for all of our locations, who had previously been the pharmacist in Smith Center at the pharmacy chain location that closed, we recognized an opportunity to bring back the pharmacist that the community trusted and wanted to continue serving their healthcare needs.

Management & Support Services

In order to support the growing company, which has grown to over 30 employees in four locations, a Management and Support Services Center was established in 2013. Out of this office, accounting, human resources, marketing, and other management services are performed to support all Midwest Family Health locations. The Management and Support Services offices are conveniently located next door to the Phillipsburg pharmacy location.
